Why Give?

BCPC is the only lifeline to hundreds of LGBTQ youth, seniors, people living with HIV/AIDS, the homeless, and victims of domestic violence in the Bronx. These people are disenfranchised and are in dire need our assistance. Today, there are more unserved LGBT people living in the Bronx than in any other Borough in New York City. BCPC is the singular organization serving this community. Everyday, LGBTQ people come to our center to rebuild their lives and build their own communities. Here are two of their stories::
Nanay’s Story
When Nanay’s cousin brought her to BCPC one year ago she was a shy, teenage mother and high school dropout. She was extremely introverted and reluctant to socialize with her peers. BCPB helped her to complete her GED. With the support of her peers at the center, having received intensive case management and counseling, she now feels connected with the community and councils other teens at BCPB. This place means the world to me. I learned to like myself here. I don’t have to pretend to be someone I’m not, and know that I can set a good example for my daughter just by being me, she says.
Ingrid’s Story
A retired butch woman in her mid-70s, was referred to BCPC by a neighbor. She’d never had any kids and had recently split from her partner of 40 years. She felt isolated and lonely, and had a lot of time on her hands. BCPC linked her up with The Department of Aging, and now she receives a stipend to work with us Monday through Friday, In addition she serves as a foster grandparent for many of the youth, who don’t have parental figures in the LGBT community to mentor them and to show them that they are cared for. I’m not alone anymore, she says. “Now, I have family”.
